Smoke Letting Wins 2009 Battle of the Bands
The Travis Manor Band Shell rocked on Friday July 3rd as area bands battled it out for the title of the areas best garage band at Franklin’s 4th of July civic celebration. The eclectic mix of music ranged from the acoustic guitar to heavy metal as the bands, ranging in age from 13 to 17, gave it their all before an appreciative audience.
Smoke Letting emerged victorious to win First Place and the honor to play on the family stage on the 4th of July. The band formed about a year ago to enter the Franklin High School Talent contest. Smoke Letting earned the band high marks in originality and stage presence from the panel of judges as lead vocalist Aaron Baker impressed the audience with his guitar mastery. Band members Alex Bennett guitar/backup vocals, Aaron Baker Bass/Vocals, Alex Grundjliewski on drums drew their inspiration from Iron Maiden, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Judas Priest.
Coming in at Second Place was a group named Safe Haven who’s members include brother and sister team Ben Smith on guitar and keyboard and Ashley Smith, lead vocals and Randy Rabocowitz on guitar and Zach Robb on drums.
The first place and second place winners receive a trophy. First Place winners received a cash prize. Other groups performing were the Curb Farmers and Brighter.
The event has been hosted by the Franklin Cultural Arts Center (FCAC) organization for the past 4 years. FCAC president Don Dorsan said, “Of all the events we do, I look forward to hosting the Battle of the Bands because it provides a venue to showcase the talented kids in our community. I am constantly amazed by the talent and dedication these young performing artists display year after year.”
